Blog #4 Letter, old way to communicate?

   Hello everyone :)
This time, I want to write about a way of communication.
Some of my friends would already know that I have many pen friends in foreign countries. In last autumn, I started using the website  japan guide for making pen friends in foreign countries. To explain about the website a little, you can meet foreigners from all over the world who are interested in Japan. You can post your own ad on which you`ve written your personal date like name, hobby and so on. And to see your ad, foreing people who are interested in you send you message. And same like, you can send messages to people who you`re interested in.
Well, the reason I started using this website is that I was just interested in having pen friends and wanted to exchange emails or letters with them for long time. I hoped to find real friends in foreign countries.
Actually I have a German friend who have kept in touch with me for more than 4 years. But she is doctor and sometimes too busy to write me backs soon. Though she is very good friend of mine and I love her, I wanted to have more pen friends who can talk with me often. That`s also a reason why I started using Japan Guide. After I started using Japan Guide, I`ve got so many messages from people in all over the world. As my major is German, many German people contact me :) I can`t count how many people I`ve met exactly on this website. But real friends are just some of them, I think. I hope I can keep in touch with many of them!
Now I`m exchanging letters with almost all of my pen friends. I can contact on emails, too. But letters are more personal way to communicate, I think. It`s really nice feeling to find letters in my mail box when I came home :) haha
Some people say to me that "Wow! You are exchanging letters. Not emails?"
I can understand what these people think. They think that letters are a kind of old tradition to communicate in the times. Emails are more common, you know.
What do you think about letters? Is it just an old tradition. Or should this way of communication exist in email-times?

Sorry, it`s Asami who wrote it.

  2. I love writing letters. Especially since I came to Japan, I have come to enjoy doing this because first of all, I have lots of people at home and around the world to write to, and second, Japan has beautiful stationery, postage stamps, and seals to decorate with. I can choose the stationery I want according to the season or the message I want to convey to the reader.
I also write to my friends and family in Japan. Some friends live in Tokyo, but we communicate through letters to share our thoughts and reports about our activities. Actually, one of these friends does not have a computer so letter writing suits her just fine. And of course my mother-in-law doesn't have a computer either - we take pleasure in sending each other letters and postcards. It is also a good way for me to practise reading and writing in Japanese.
So, all in all, I love letter writing and am happiest when I come home to find a letter in my mailbox.
Shall we write letters to each other?

  5. I think E-mails are better than letters when I talk with my penpals. It is because E-mails are free, I can write it easier and get it earlier. I can send many photos and music easily. Why do you use letters? Don't you think E-mails are more useful than letters? We must be happy when E-mails are coming and then, we can tell what we are thinking now!

  6. Hello Hoh :)
    Thanks for your interesting point!

Yeah, e-mails are faster than letters and you can send your message very quickly and easily. And yes, it`s free.
Actually I`ve been liked writing letters and receiving them since I was child. Because I really like beautiful stationary, I mean letter paper and envelope. So I often buy them and want to use them XD haha
As you say, Emails may be more useful than letters but still I want to keep writing letters with many of my pen friends :) Letters are more personal and heartful than emails :)

And one practical reason, you know, emails are faster than letters. So when you get an email from your pen friend, you must write back quick. But it takes air mails about a week or so. So you don`t have to write back so quick :)
It saves lots of my time :)

  7. I think the purpose are different between letter and email. Letters are more useful in order to express what you feel than mail. Stationery and the characters you write make the receivers different impression. Therefore you can tell them more exactly what you feel.
About emails, as Asami said above, emails are faster way to tell the receiver what you feel than letters.
Therefore I think which is preferred as the way to express depends on your purpose. If you prefer the speed, you can choose email. If you prefer the accuracy and the variety, you can choose letters.
