Good evening everyone,
How are you? Today I`d like to write about part-time jobs of students.
Now that many students have part-time job after their classes. The reason why they work would be various. Some work to earn some money for going out with friends, some work to earn money for studying abroad and so on. Of course they are really reasonable reasons.
I think working while they are students becomes very great experience. Before they start working after graduation, it`s good to know what "working" is like. They can also learn what it is like to "earn money" and how they should behave in society as an adult. In working they have lots of chances to learn polite expression, in Japanese "Keigo". This surely helps them with preparing for job interviews. Many people would have these impressions about part-time jobs of students. They are all good points, right? Or do you have any different good points? If you do, please tell me in your comments.
This time I want to talk about some bad points of part-time job.
Recently getting part-time job has become difficult for students. As for me, before I got current teaching job, I had to apply for lots of jobs but wasn`t be hired for long time. I don`t remember exactly, but I applied for more than 10 jobs. How about you? Were you hired soon after you started applying for jobs? I don`t know exact reason why it`s difficult for students to get part-time jobs. But I guess, one reason is recession. And the the other reason is that students are too busy to work a lot and can`t adjust their schedules to the provided working schedule. So employees are reluctant to hire students as a part-time worker. What do you think of this trend? Even though students want to (or have to) earn money, they can`t get job easily. Students can`t get opportunity to learn social skills before they start working.
And one more thing,
I think students are tend to be too much busy at part-time jobs. For example, if they work as cleark of shops or waiter at restaurants, many of them must work on weekend. And some employees demand so long and busy working schedule. So even though students want to concentrate on their school lives, they sometimes have to dedicate their time to part-time job. I don`t think it`s good. The priority of students should be studying and their club activity even though they need to earn money. What do you think?
If you have other bad points of part-time jobs of students, let me know in your comments.
Take care,
Asami

About first your suggestion about good points of part-time job, I had an experience of part-time job as remover. Actually this was my first experience as a part-time job. In this job, I worked from 6 to 23 o'clock in a day. I learned how hard to work. This experience told me about the importance of money.
ReplyDeleteAbout second your suggestion about present trend, I don't think it is difficult to get job. I always don't use booklets. It is because the companies which advertise the job by booklet take a lot of cost, so they have to choose perfect employee in order to get paying. On the other hand the shop which advertise the job in front of the shop gives easily the job.
About the third your suggestion of priority, I cannot tell which is important necessarily. It is because not few people study in evening school after their job. I think it is more important for them to work than to learn. But the students who don't need to work hard but work hard to play or buy something unimportant should study hard.
Motoki
Now, I have a part-time job tutoring a kindergartener in Japanese and mathematics. Yes, I can many good points about the part-time job. About my job, I can watch her growing and how she develop her abilities and learn what to teach her. I think this experience will be useful in my child care. My job's bad points are that she is a child at the mischievous age and usually confuse me haha and that Sunday is not a holiday for me because I work.
ReplyDeleteI think students can't get a job easily because students can leave a part-time job because their schedule tends to change due to their school events. Employers want to hire a person who can work for long so they tend to hire more housewives than students. Well, I think you can get job easily without picking and choosing. I often find McDonalds advertisement for help and some my friends work there. They work from 5 am to 10 am and after the work, they attend a class!
Why do we work? The reason must be that we have some purposes. However, if the purposes are not vague, we don't need to work. We should always make sure why we work and whether we have to work. He has a firm purpose, and it is no problem for him to be busy with his work. If he really need money without working, why doesn't he get a school loan?
Hoh Saito,
The job market is tough for students too. I agree with Motoki that it is better to hunt for the place you want to work and then approach them and ask if you can be hired to work there. Students need to decide their priorities when selecting the job and considering the working hours and their study schedules. Which do they want more - money or good grades? And some employers need to be more sensitive to students' exam schedules, at least. However, I think employers have the right to demand their employees to maintain regular schedules because they have a business to run and they need consistency in their workforce.
ReplyDeleteI did day jobs during the university year and then got different jobs during summer vacation when I didn't have to go to school.
Where do you work now? Are you satisfied with the job? What are the work hours and how do you feel about them?
